Bacteriostatic water testing: what a COA does — and doesn't — tell you.

Bacteriostatic water is the least glamorous thing in the box and the easiest to fake: it looks exactly like plain water, because it nearly is. The entire product claim lives in one invisible ingredient — benzyl alcohol at 0.9% w/v — and the only way to know it's there at strength is to measure it.

What the test actually measures

By HPLC, two things: identity (the peak is benzyl alcohol — right retention time and UV character against a reference standard) and concentration (how many mg/mL of it are in the vial). The label claim is 9 mg/mL — 0.9% w/v — and a conforming result lands within 85–115% of that claim, about 7.7–10.4 mg/mL. The certificate reports the measured concentration against the claim and derives the approximate mg per vial from the labeled fill volume (3 mL, 10 mL, 30 mL — the bottle size doesn't change the 9 mg/mL target, only the total).

A recent conforming example from our bench: 9.16 mg/mL measured — 102% of claim. That's what a properly made bottle looks like.

The failure modes we look for

  • No preservative at all— plain or sterile water relabeled as bacteriostatic. The benzyl alcohol peak simply isn't there. This is the dangerous one, because the product invites multi-dose use the contents can't support.
  • Underpreserved — benzyl alcohol present but well below claim (diluted somewhere in the chain).
  • Wrong preservative or extra peaks — something else in the chromatogram that has no business in water for injection.

Purity is not sterility — the question everyone asks

A chemistry COA answers: is the right molecule present at the right concentration? It does not answer: is the vial free of living microorganisms?That second question is microbiological — a sterility test is a different discipline with different methods, and an HPLC certificate makes no claim about it either way. A vendor waving a purity number as proof of “clean” is answering a question you didn't ask. If a lab tells you its chemistry test covers sterility, find another lab.

Where pH fits

pH is a separate, optional measurement — useful for brands documenting their product against a specification (typical spec window 4.5–7.0). When it's measured, it prints as its own row on the certificate; when it isn't, an honest certificate omits the row rather than printing a dash for the reader to interpret.

Testing it is cheap insurance

Bacteriostatic water tests at a flat $75— it's a single-analyte method, and it prices accordingly (pricing). For a brand bundling bac water with peptide kits, one conforming certificate per lot is the difference between “trust us” and a publicly verifiable result.
